Periodontal Therapy

When periodontal disease is detected early, it can be treated with non-surgical therapy. This type of therapy gets rid of calculus and plaque by treating conditions that trigger gum disease. It also regulates the growth of dangerous bacteria. Before you begin periodontal therapy, your dentist may replace worn crowns and fillings that have accumulated plaque over time.

Scaling and Root Planing:

Scaling is known as a common dental cleaning process that removes calculus and plaque from the gumline and teeth. The process of root planing consists of smoothing out the root surfaces. The purpose of this technique is so that your supportive tissues can bind to the tooth’s surface. Patients are given local anesthesia to help prevent pain.

Antibiotics

The most efficient way to eliminate or control periodontal disease is to remove bacteria causing disease. Patients are given scaling and root planing that’s applied to the infected gum in powder or pill form. Another option is for a patient to be given a mouth rinse – this antibacterial agent minimizes plaque.

Occlusal Adjustment:

Patients with traumatic occlusion or an improper bite may be more prone to bone destruction around the tooth area. A patient is provided with one or two options – have a removable custom bite guard designed that is placed on the bottom or top teeth or modify the bite so the teeth clasp together. The purpose of the bite guard is to help relax the jaw muscles and guard the surface of the teeth.
